I could hear one of the yard trimmer jobs working the west end of the yard on UP, so I headed over there to check it out. The train had pulled out of the yard quite a ways, so I had to wait on them to shove back to grab another cut. It ended up taking much longer than I had expected, and a brief but heavy rainshower went through which almost made me give up on it. But, the waiting paid off when I finally heard the conductor on Utility 11 tell UP 1080 to backup 40. I dont know about you, but there arent a lot of geeps that look as good as ones in armour yellow out there. |

Following the ZLTG2 was the MG3G3. This train is usually dominated by SD70Ms, but today, a GP60 was along for the ride, and was leading todays eastbound. Unfortunately, it had no cars leaving Rochelle, which was a little bit of a bummer. So, I tried to think of a good place to get a nice roster shot of the power. The big grain elevator at Meredith proved to be a good location for that. I was worried about the Z train being too fast for me. Well, apparently the locals are trains to be reckoned with too, as it hit the defect detector going almost 70 MPH. I suppose you can do things like that in an engine with no PTC or TO. And, without a doubt, they were doing that by me. Neat! |

I90 was the fastest way across Chicago to the museum according to the GPS. We still had about another hour to spare before the museum opened, however, and with plenty of NS traffic bumping around on the Chicago Line, we ended up stopping at Porter to see what we could get. As it turned out, we had missed a large hunk of the action, but there was still plenty of it to come, as all three railroads into town had trains on them. After meeting a westbound, NS B08 was given permission east out of the Porter Yard with a pair of NS GP60s. A large puddle from recent rainfall made for a nice opportunity for a reflection shot. |

Since we have had all this rain lately, a bridge collapsed on the Huntington District outide of Roanoke so NS is rerouting many trains down the Newcastle line, including this local. Notice this train also has an un-patched Conrail caboose. This local starts in Ft. Wayne and I have never seen a Conrail caboose in Ft. Wayne, so I am guessing this caboose was in Elkhart and was taken down to the Fort by the Elkhart local. |

After M334 cleared, I sent up a quick prayer and made a mad-man dash back up to NS rails. I knew there was a good chance the train would already be out of the yard before I could make it, and I didnt want to go very far west to shoot the train. So I just crossed my fingers and made a bee-line for the big limestone quarry west of town. And somehow, someway, I managed to beat the train. Thankfully, they still had to do their air test and throw some switches before leaving. But, it didnt take long for the solo thoroughbred GP60 to come thundering along with its train for Hennepin in tow. Great to see these things still kicking in the original NS paint scheme! |

With pure grit and determination (and prayers) I somehow, someway, managed to get to Bird Park before the train did. I grabbed my equipment and went up the IL 17 sidewalk across the river. Minutes later, here came B66 rumbling along back toward the yard with another thoroughbred GP60. This one honestly sealed the day for me. I had managed to do a lot of things this trip that I didnt expect that I would or could, but the timing of this one could not have been more perfect. Yet another bucket list shot! |
