CN 3015
Title:  CN 3015
Description:  And just like that, in the blink of an eye, the trip was on its final day. The rest of the group had already been back home for four days now, and I had yet to cross back into Indiana! But, today, that was all going to change. It was pretty bittersweet waking up and knowing the trip would finally come to a close at the end of the day. I really loved every bit of this trip, from Higher Things to the trains, but at the same time, I was ready to be back home. However, I had one more full day of trains planned. Being in Kankakee, I intended on spending most of my time on CNs Chicago Subdivision and seeing what I could find between here and Gilman. But, I was also open to trying to get some shots on the Joint Line, TPW, or KBS if the opportunities presented themselves. KBS was just making a simple Lafayette dash and back today, so I decided a one-and-done in Sheldon sometime in the afternoon would satisfy me enough with them. One more sunrise wake-up call, and one more hotel breakfast, and I was out on the road again. The City of New Orleans still showed to be south of Kankakee, so I decided to head downtown to shoot it. Sure enough, when I arrived, I was greeted with a green signal northbound. The sun was in just the right spot for a well-lit shot of the train coming across the concrete bridge over the Kankakee River. Fully expecting Amtrak, you can imagine my surprise when moments after my arrival I heard the sound of a K5HL. And I bet you can imagine my utter shock when Z195 popped across the bridge with one of two of CNs Veterans Units on the front! What a heck of a way to start the last day!

CN 3097
Title:  CN 3097
Description:  For the past week or so a duo of IC GP40R rebuilds had been running the Kankakee Local. I decided as a pre-bithday treat to myself I would go out and follow them on their little trip south to the yard in Otto, IL and back. I got up early in the morning and made the long drive west from Ossian to Kankakee where I awaited the crews OD time. I was able to catch some other action as well. Almost as soon as I arrived at the Kankakee Amtrak Station, a northbound intermodal with 2 Tier 4 GEs passed.

CN 3177
Title:  CN 3177
Description:  Chirps from CSX I131 were also coming over the radio, which was a little concerning, as I had a feeling that I would not be able to move toward the last pair of signals that I needed to grab at the interlocking with the Toledo Sub at Sidney. With determination (and speed), I did manage to make it into Sidney to get the train crossing over the Toledo Sub at CP 163. The westbound facing signals are attached to a much newer cantilever, which do sort of break the authenticity, but theyre still trilights, and not vaders, and thats what matters. Todays I131 features a Canadian Guest on the head end, something that is rare for this train, and just rare for the Indy Line in general.

CN 3180
Title:  CN 3180
Description:  Since we were staying in Morton, IL at the Holiday Inn outside of Peoria, we thought it would be natural to follow the CN south to Gilman then follow the TPW over toward Peoria. We started our time on the IC at the main classification yard in Homewood. Things were very dead upon arrival, but we knew we had CN L515 coming north, which usually sports IC SD70s. Unfortunately for us, as it got closer, CN Q119 pulled out of the yard to double up its train. The main parking at the gazebo was closed for construction and we had to park much closer to the yard lead than what we usually would. The odds of the intermodal train eclipsing the local were quite high now.

CN 3222
Title:  CN 3222
Description:  After scouring both ends of the massive IHB Gibson Yard, we werent able to find any traces of IHB power, so we decided to go down to CP Hohman where the IHB crosses the NS Chicago District. Trains are an almost constant flow through this interlocking, as we ended up missing an inbound BNSF autroack train while trying to get placed. A CN B790 was parked in the Calumet City Yard awaiting to be taken into the Potash Corp of America just a few miles further to the east by an IHB crew. A nice CN 100 GEVO/KCS duo made for an interesting lashup to start the day.

CN 3244
Title:  CN 3244
Description:  After L515 yarded things became very dead. We decided to move over to the shadow side of the tracks on the Metra/Amtrak platform to avoid any Metras being eclipsed by the stack train. Eventually the stack train finished doubling and took off. A near identical GEVO brought up the rear.

CN 3250
Title:  CN 3250
Description:  Looking at ATCS again we noticed we did have an eastbound CN train lined up to Wellsboro. We drove up to the tiny unincorporated community of Haskells, and waited on a very slow CN A440 to take down the signals there. Not sure why it was moving so slowly. There were still some daisies in full bloom which added to the frame a bit.

Description:  After some debating, we decided to conclude our day watching trains around Winton Place (mostly because I knew where I was going and knew how to get there). Some other local railfan friends joined us and we got to see a fair amount of traffic pass. First off was NS 178 heading north. A Skyline Chilli billboard stands tall beside I75 which is right off to the left. Hands down the best chilli in all of Cincinnati.

NS 3624
Title:  NS 3624
Description:  I was beginning to get a little nervous since it was still an hours drive to Connersville from Muncie and it was already after 8 AM. We knew we had more NS traffic coming, but we decided to follow CSX east to Farmland and go straight down State Road 1 from there, hoping we would run into a westbound. And we did; I007 in Parker City. Unfortunately for us, we never heard it call signals until they hit Parker City. And right when we got there, so did it. So, we ended up missing it. However, that ended up going in our favor, as once we made it back to NS rails in Hagerstown, a few of our northbounds were already there. The first one was NS 51G, which was just blasting out of the siding at Bailey after a meet with NS 123. Unfortunately, it began to rain pretty hard here. But, the frame turned out pretty good for the crap conditions.

NS 3627 and PC Junker
Title:  NS 3627 and PC Junker
Description:  Another inbound train sits just outside the Mini Plant, this one being NS 861 awaiting a new crew before it continues south on the Sandusky District. It isnt uncommon for trains to pull up and park by the old PC E Unit that is privately owned by a dude across the street from the museum, but ever since "No Trespassing" was painted over the PC Logo on the locomotive, I havent felt too comfortable going back there to get shots of trains paired together there. Had to make due with what I could in this shot.

NS 3639
Title:  NS 3639
Description:  NS 3639 leads NS 197 south through Ossian. Today was a very weather eventful day, most of the storms produced very severe storms and tornadoes in the area. The Starbucks in Kokomo got flattened. Everyone who was affected by these storms are in my prayers

NS 3642
Title:  NS 3642
Description:  As time passed things began to look more and more like they werent going to go my way. The only unit left in the yard was the BN unit. There was no LSL power for the day, so my thought came to be that maybe the LNL was still out there. So, I followed the line north to Leipsic (without any CSX trains too I might add) and sure enough I found the LNL with the Lima B crew which had relieved the original LNL crew. They had left their train north of Lima to do all the work that they had to do in Lima. Of course it was with a quartet of orange units, but one of the Australian SD50s was on the front, which did make it a little better. I had a little time to mess around before they would take off south, and during that time NS 21T came roaring by westbound.

Description:  Now with four trains in Greenwood under my belt, I was ready to continue heading east. Im still a bit confused on how it happened, but I just narrowly missed a short grain train at South Bend. With no grade crossings anywhere between South Bend and the west side of Ashland, I decided to count it as a loss and continue heading east. Thankfully, westbound E-PAMWTM1-38 was close behind, which I was able to make it into Louisville for. Ash Grove Concrete has a large facility located here which can be easily framed with westbound trains. A very tall pile of ballast also gave me a little bit of elevation for the shot as well. This might be one of my favorites from the entire trip!
