As suspected, I had missed a few trains on both the CN and even the UP/CSX Joint Line while here in Sheldon. But, the KBS and TPW shots were pretty worth it in my opinion. But, there was still plenty of daylight left to use. So, it was back to the main lines. According to my friends who were here in Sheldon, todays M335 had a IC Deathstar SD70 on the front, which was obviously a no brainer to catch. It sounded like they were still a pretty far ways away still so we werent in a very big rush. Red signals in both directions at Watseka meant a clear shot to the CN at Danforth. Unlike Watseka, we were greeted with a green signal for a northbound here. Local A408, the train that usually has the Deathstars on the front, apparently had a repaint leader today according to my friends. And, surprisingly enough, A408 ended up being the train that the green signal was for, with the repaint up front. |

After Amtrak I worked my way north to Gilman where I noticed that the L555 local to Otto would be sporting a Deathstar on the front. Exactly what I was hoping for. However, at the same time, I also heard peeps coming from the Bloomer frequency. I was a bit torn on what to do, but since I had never shot the Bloomer before I decided to make that my priority. Not even 4 miles out of Gilman and I picked up L555 keying up the dispatch ready to go north. I knew chances were if I chased the Bloomer I would not get back to the IC in time to see L555 come south, so I turned around and went back. Set up at Danforth, and boy was it worth it! |

Its hard to believe now, but at one time, the IC used to be a whopping 4 tracks from Homewood all the way down to Gilman. Large chunks of the original codeline are still in place, but arent very easy to photograph trains with since they sit so far away from what is now the mainline. That didnt stop me from trying though. I pulled over at CR 3100N just north of Clifton and grabbed M335 passing a couple poles. Not great, but not bad, and something different than what I usually do on these trips. |

Once we made it into the city, traffic began to slow way down, despite being well past rush hour. However, that ended up being a very good thing, especially when deathstar black caught my eye. CN L535 was waiting for permission into the city with a pair of Deathstars, and thanks to the slow moving traffic, I was able to get a pretty clean shot of the train with the Chicago Skyline in the back. After leaving Pine, we took one more swing around Kirk Yard to see if there were any CN trains/waiting to go into the yard, and sure enough there was. A manifest with 7 engines, including an IC Deathstar 3rd in line, was waiting for permission. We pulled off at an auto dealership to take photos of the deathstar. This would serve as the final train of the day. What a first day it was! 43 trains all together with some pretty nice catches! And Pine Jct, is just like everyne says it is, unstoppable! Every time one train would pass, you could see the next one! Despite it being so cold and snowy it was very fun! Tomorrow we go to church and the Great Midwest Train Show in Wheaton, IL then watch trains afterwards! Very good day! Hope to go back to Pine again soon! |

After looking at all there was to see west of town, we knew we would just have to play catch up for A407, as nothing else was poised to come our direction. We went and got "lupper" (as we like to call it) at the Dairy Queen in Clifton, then continued south. Not even 2 minutes after we were out of the drive thru, A407 screamed north, unfortunately with a repaint IC SD70 leading the deathstar. It took some effort, but we made it back to Chebanse in time to grab it coming by the IC depot. |
