The southbound grain train had not one, but two northbound bulk trains to meet at Warner, so it was back to Colona for both of them. Once again, thanks to the curves and grades, it made for a longer than usual wait, but eventually I could hear the flanges squealing and the horn on UMIIMNX7-01. It soon slowly curved its way around the interlocking at Colona. This place has grown up with brush considerably since I was last here with Dad 6 years ago. |

After the freight I had a choice; I could move west along the UP and catch my next two westbounds at Malta and Cortland, or I could move into Rochelle, and catch a number of BNSF trains all converging into town at that moment. It looked like those would be my final BNSF trains of the whole day if I didnt. So, I caved and skipped out on Malta and Cortland to try to catch the BNSF trains. My first one was already going south through Rochelle when I came into town, so I jumped onto I39 and raced it south to Steward where I grabbed it exiting the double track by the elevator on the northwest side of town. Z-SSECHC3-01 works its way toward Chicago. One of the many Chicago/Seattle Z trains that traverse the Aurora Sub. |

Since I was unable to get some of the shots I had wanted on the Transcon yesterday due to it being dead most of the evening, I decided that my all day outing in Galesburg was going to take a bit of a side track during the morning to shoot the morning rush on the Transcon out to Media and back. Dad and I usually visit Galesburg during Railroad Days, but because of the trip I was currently on, we were unable to go together this year. So, I decided I did want to take a full day of exploring the BNSF hub before I continued further east. No breakfast at the Baymount Inn meant a quick breakfast at McDonalds and down to the tracks at the grain elevator downtown to nab eastbound Z-NBYWSP8-12 in some sweet golden light. A good way to start the day. |

BNSF began sending more trains so it was back to the other side of the river. Unfortunately, as the CP ballast train was running through, the H1 Dash 9 that was leading the tied down grain train left. It was really unfortunate we couldnt see both of them. But, the KCS SD70MACs are probably in more danger, so it was the right choice to shoot it over the grain train. The next train on BNSF, despite it just having a GEVO leader, was pretty unique too; an empty windmill blade train symboled U-NOYBTX1-30. Definitely would have been cool to see it loaded, but still a pretty neat train regardless. |

The Phoenix Q was the last of the eastbound parade which gave me enough time to make a dash for Smithshire. Smithshire was a target for trains yesterday, but I never managed to get any because of how slow the Transcon was. However, this morning, things were already beginning to ramp up again. There was a maintainer on the tracks between Smithshire and Ormonde, so the railroad was down to one track, which explained the eastbound parade a little more this morning. There were westbounds in the picture now, and it didnt take long before the first of a few got their permission through the work limits and was by me at Smithshire. A tall pile of small stones provided for a bit of a heigh advantage here, and made for a good wide angle shot of ZWSPSTO2-15 passing the grain elevator. |
