We moved down to Dekalb Agri to find a wide open spot to shoot CP 529 with our first CPKC leader of the day. We had assumed the eastbound CPKC leader on CP 528 would show up first, but with no opposing traffic, 529 made it to the area first. Along with the brand new CPKC leader, there was a nice, colorful mix of power behind the leader, including CP, KCS, and UP motors. After a little bit of waiting, CP 529 charged west. |

Things went silent on the Chicago Line, so we sat along the Chicago Line to wait for the eastbound CPKC leader on 528. Surprisingly, despite being out of Elkhart, the train had yet to make it to us. Finally, the scanner came back to life, but once again on the Huntington District. NS 172 finally broke the quietness of Butler and rolled east into town, coming around the big curve at West Butler. |

Then finally, we heard CP 528 on the radio, and after a little bit more waiting, it slowly rounded the bend into Butler. At the same time, an intermodal raced it on the opposite track. If it would have shown a few seconds earlier we would have had a perfect train race! Oh well, maybe next time. |

With the sun setting, we decided it was time to head toward home. We knew the CSX SDI local was working the SDI siding grabbing the set-off made from M867 from the morning, so we decided to follow the Wabash for a bit to see if we could find them. A headlight greeted us at SDI, which was NS L87 for Montpelier. We had fantastic golden light when we made it to the crossing, but unfortunately, the sun had completely set by the time the train passed us. |

Sure enough, CSX L378 got permission up to SDI following the L87, we saw headlights, and we waited for it at the crossing just south from the pond south of SDI. Once it got a roll-on on NS trackage, we moved up to the pond and grabbed the train slowly making its way over the pond. A great way to end a phenomenal day in Northeast Indiana! |
