Eastbound after eastbound continued to roll on NS. I knew I had a NS 880 coming which almost 100% of the time has BNSF power up front. The trees behind the Autozone in Elkhart usually turn a nice deep orange, and thats where I had planned to grab it. However, I overshot my location, and it ended up beating me there. Foolishly, I backtracked to Dunlap to grab a shot of the train navigating through all the MOW that was out and about today, and the deep shadows that still were over the tracks. |

Buzzi Concrete was next to work on the far north side of Osceola. I ate my lunch while waiting for the train to finish working there. I had plans to chase the entire way to Mishawaka, but my luck was cut short when the engines were split on both sides of the train and it began heading back toward Elkhart. Well... so much for shooting the blue geep over the entire line. |

Despite the Elkhart and Western moving very slow, all of their line is in town and it isnt very easy to chase as the roads that do follow the tracks are usually pretty busy, which was why I had hoped they would go all the way to Mishawaka today. But, they were not, so I would have to settle with only 3-4 shots for the chase. First shot was back at CR 1 on the far west side of Elkhart. |

The day was coming to a close and I still hadnt made it out of the holds of Goshen yet, but with NS quieting down once again, I had more than enough time to get out. Next stop was Millersburg. The trees are usually pretty nice and with the shadows well across the tracks at this point it really didnt matter what side I shot from. I parked beside a tree that I photographed with a morning eastbound the year prior, and nabbed NS S81 westbound in the same spot. Normally even the extra Detroit Edison coal trains have BNSF power. This one, however, did not. |

After the CP autorack train, it was evident NS wasnt going to send anything else before dark, so I decided to start making my way back south. When I reached the CSX in Kimmell I noticed there was a green signal for a westbound at Cromwell. I had just enough daylight to sit and wait on it. I went to the Noe Street crossing on the east side of town where there was some fairly decent color along the tracks. I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and eventually the sun went down. Right when I was packing up, however, I could finally hear both the voice over the scanner and the horn of CSX I171 screaming west. A few minutes later a trio of BNSF GEs appeared and raced by toward Chicago. And to think I almost gave up! Definitely wasnt the day I was expecting when I started it, but still a good train day nonetheless! |
