RMEX 4 |
Description: |
First off right up front and center was RMEX 4, former MAW 4. Sparty was recently sold to another company and was taken off the property about a month prior to me being here, so this is the only regularly working motor on the property as far as I know. It appears the Wendelin is trying to get out of the railroad business with all the recent sales with locomotives and properties. |

RMEX 4 |
Description: |
I was hoping to grab L421 on the bridge over Western Avenue, but we struck a friendly conversation with the CSX MTO at Connersville, and it departed during our chat. After chatting, I got a text from the conductor on the CVNR that they were headed up toward the interchange with the RMEX 4 and one of the Camp Chase GP9RMs. The RMEX 4 is the ex-MAW 4, a GP7u still wearing its ATSF bluebonnet scheme, and is currently the only operating locomotive on the CVNR. However, since the consist was a bit heavy to bring back, and the interchange between the CVNR and CSX is a bit steep, they needed a little extra weight, so one of the project units was added, which would make an already eye-popping consist even more mind blowing. We worked over to the CVNR, and sure enough the two units were slowly making their way toward the interchange. We grabbed our first shot at 18th Street. |

A closer shot of the train passing the steel NKP whistle post. Western Avenue is usually busy all times of the day in Connersville, and I couldnt do too much about the semi on the right. |

Some more puddles from the morning rain gave us some interesting perspectives. The shots were a bit tight here, but I cant say Ive gotten shots like this of the bridge before! |

A mad dash to the cemetery ended up proving useless, as the train beat us there, but the attempt wasnt a total loss, as it still gave us a good side look at the very colorful consist. |

RMEX 5 |

Unfortunately Wabash Central was not doing anything today, but we decided to swing down to CR 450E on the east side of town to grab a quick roster shot of RMEX 5. Its beyond cool to have a Bluebonnet so close to home. |

RMEX 5 |
Description: |
I thought since I shot RMEX 4, and I would be taking State Road 1 all the way home, I might as well make a quick stop in Bluffton to grab a photo of its sister, RMEX 5. Both 4 and 5 served on the MAW for several years together before being shipped down to Connersville after Pioneer bought the MAW in 2013. The 4 was kept on the Connersville side of the line and was sandblasted while the 5 stayed on the New Castle side of the line and still had all its Santa Fe lettering in tact. In 2021, the 5 was sent to Bluffton to assist with CNUR 7 on the Craigville side to eliminate having to do a rolling switch when serving Lotter Farms there. After Midwest Rail acquired the Wabash Central earlier this year, this unit was included in the sale, and for now, will remain operating over the line. It will be interesting to see what happens to it in the future, however, as major maintenance projects are already beginning on the line, and I can only imagine if things begin to boom that they will be looking for more reliable motive power. The 4s future also is uncertain with rumors circulating that Midwest Rail may also be acquiring the Connersville Line after a new customer moves into the old Ford Plant in Connersville. With all that being said, however, I thought capping the day off seeing both ATSF GP7us was pretty cool! Definitely one of my best trips of the year! |
